When I first arrived at the orphanage, Maria’s behavior often centered around her own needs. She appeared self-centered and yearned for attention. Yet, within this challenging environment, I’ve witnessed an incredible transformation in her. Despite her continued desire to be the center of focus, she has learned the value of sharing, a significant step forward. Working here with six girls, it’s essential to attend to everyone’s needs, and it’s been a learning curve for us all.
In this journey of mutual growth, I’ve realized the profound impact I’ve had on these girls, and, in turn, how they’ve influenced me. I used to be someone who would raise their voice, but now, I’ve learned to control it. This change in behavior hasn’t just stayed within the orphanage; it’s extended to my home life. I’ve found the strength to seek help and engage differently with those around me, mirroring the patience I’ve been nurturing in the girls.
One crucial lesson learned is that change cannot be forced upon anyone; it has to come from within. I’ve adopted an approach of understanding and compassion, refusing to take the girls’ actions personally. Their behavior doesn’t define them; it’s the struggles within that manifest in their actions. It’s vital to shower them with positivity, even when they are not at their best, recognizing that their true selves are obscured by these challenges.
These girls, despite their occasional challenging behavior, never aim to offend. Their actions, although difficult, are not directed at me personally. I maintain my composure, knowing that their perceptions differ and that their behavior is a result of deeper issues.
This journey has been a testament to the transformative power of empathy and patience. The strides made are not just in the lives of the girls but in mine too. It’s a reminder of the profound impact that a nurturing environment can have on fostering growth and resilience.
